ABOUT THE PROGRAMME: Sally Ride EarthKAM is a NASA sponsored project. EarthKAM means Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students. It is an educational program that enables students to take pictures of their own planet from a digital camera on board the International Space Station (ISS) via a web interface. International Space Station is an artificial satellite where astronauts reside for various experiments based on micro-gravity. EarthKAM camera is till date a permanent payload on board the ISS and supports approximately four missions annually, one for each season. The recent mission was opened from 11th April to 14thApril 2023
DATE OF CONDUCTION: 11th April 2023

DETAILS OF THE WORKSHOP: The workshop took place in Sr. Computer Lab of the school from 10:05AM – 11:20AM. A total of 48 students from different schools were part of this workshop.
Students were briefed about ISS and then guided to select locations of interest and request ISS EarthKAM to take images of those locations.
The workshop started with a presentation on Sally Ride EarthKAM and a brief demonstration of how the program interface works by an educator, who showed the students how to request for the photographs keeping various aspects such as orbital path of ISS, weather, location, and day/night preference in mind.
After this, the students were given the freedom to choose their own locations and spent an hour of exciting time locating regions of their interest and requesting for photographs after examining weather, orbits and other aspects. Students researched and selected locations of environmental, climactic and geographical interest such natural disasters, coasts and forests, deforestation, glaciers and landscapes and monuments etc.
The project helped students understand about ISS and gave them hands on experience of researching specific locations and submitting to the project for photography.
The workshop ended with the students writing Messages to Astronauts.
